A Unique Bond
The bond humans have with horses is possibly one of the most unique and mysterious bonds on earth.
Horses have been by our side for thousands of years, domesticated around 3000 BC, and arguably the most instrumental partnership humankind has ever had. I will not condone the treatment and usage of these incredible animals that many times were and are abused in their service to us, but still they were no doubt the game-changer as societies and cultures advanced and grew. Without the horse, I am convinced we would not be where we are today in modern society and that our world would still be largely primitive. The story of the horse with humans is a long and arduous one that truly showcases the horse’s resilience.
In my work I ask questions and seek out the answers, looking for ways to highlight this story, as it is being told today and also as it has been told in the past. Horses are our heritage and I celebrate them through my work.
Some developing cultures today still depend on the horse and need the horse for agriculture, transportation, and as a beast of burden, whereas others have a different relationship with horses desiring them for sport or as partners and companions. They are not per se technically “needed” in these developed cultures, but they are greatly desired and needed in an emotional and possibly spiritual way, for the good of the body, soul, and mind.
Enamor and obsession with horses is something we can see as early as the Upper Palaeolithic cave drawings of horses in the Lascaux Caves located in southern France and it has only continued throughout the test of time. The horse is one of our greatest gifts.
